New post Theology manuals
It is commonly asserted by traditional Catholics, and by Modernists, that the doctrines contained in the approved theological manuals, insofar as these have not been defined or in some specific way approved by the Holy See, can be set aside or regarded as mere opinions. In this way countless true doctrines which enter into the fabric of sacred theology and of which not a few are actually the teaching of the Church which cannot be doubted without heresy, are ignored or rejected.

The famous anti-council, the Synod of Pistoia, which in many respects was the direct parent of Vatican II, put forward this same thesis and it was condemned in the following manner by Pope Pius VI in his Constitution, Auctorum fidei:

Quote:
79. The assertion which attacks with slanderous charges the opinions discussed in Catholic schools about which the Apostolic See has thought that nothing yet needs to be defined or pronounced,—false, rash, injurious to Catholic schools, detracting from the obedience to the Apostolic Constitutions.
