New post A question on vows.
We have a young friend who has asked us some questions concerning private vows, and are asking the forum to give opinions or other information concerning them. We have told our friend that religious vows of any kind are very serious, and should not ordinarily be attempted without proper guidance.

In the present dire situation, that proper guidance is almost 100% unavailable.

His latest question is whether a private vow would have validity if not made in the presence of at least another person?

I would think that even if this were true, that "other person" would have to be some cleric with the necessary jurisdiction.

This young man would very much like to join a monastery, but is very reluctant to put himself under any Abbot who is not of his same opinion concerning the reigning anti-popes. And even if such an Abbot could be found, what would happen if that one should die and be replaced by another, not of the same opinion?

Sigh... :(

Veni, Domine Jesu.

He could make a simple promise, renewing it each year. That way he can avoid entirely the grave danger of vows without proper guidance and supervision.

Not sure why this is a problem until and unless he knows he has a vocation to the religious life, which he won't until he tries it. Why not cross that bridge if and when he gets to it?
